The former President of French Polynesia, Gaston Flosse, has been arrested in Tahiti in connection with 30 separate cases of corruption.
Mr Flosse and his party stand accused of taking bribes over a number of years. He is also accused of embezzling 1.5 million euros intended for the postal and telecom sector.
The 78-year-old former president is a member of the centre-right block headed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. He was also an ally of former President Jacques Chirac.
He ruled the South Pacific island group from 1984 until 2008. The French senate recently lifted his immunity from prosecution.
