French Employment Minister Xavier Darcos has resigned after Sunday’s defeat of the UMP in the regional elections.
Mr Darcos was responsible for pension reform under President Nicolas Sarkozy. His duties have been taken over by Budget Minister Eric Woerth.
More changes in the cabinet are expected in the coming days.
The left won 54 percent of Sunday's vote, its best result in more than 50 years.
The UMP faces a possible split with President Sarkozy’s rival Dominique de Villepin setting up a new party.
