French hostages freed in Darfur

Published on 15 March 2010 - 8:41am
More about:

Two French aid workers kidnapped in the Central African Republic in November 2009 have been freed in the Sudanese region of Darfur.

The two men work for private aid organisation Triangle Génération Humanitaire in Lyon, which constructs waterworks and builds schools in the Central African Republic, one of Africa's poorest countries of Africa. The director of the organisation says it has not paid any ransom money.

The Freedom Eagles of Africa group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping. The group's stated aim is to fight what it regards as France's political interference in Africa.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for the release of the last French hostage in Africa, who works for the International Red Cross and was kidnapped in Darfur in October.
