The organisers of the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa are giving away 120,000 tickets. The free tickets are intended for poor South Africans working in such sectors as teaching and health care.
The selling price of World Cup tickets in South Africa is already well below that in other countries: 13 euros as opposed to a minimum of 56 euros. In South Africa around a quarter of the workforce is unemployed and most people who do have a job earn less than 10 euros a day.
