French Navy submarines have abandoned the search for the black boxes belonging to the Air France Airbus that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean more than two months ago.
The search has failed to locate the wreck of the planes but French BEA air investigators say they have not lost all hope of locating the cockpit flight recorders or black boxes. The BEA say a team of international experts will be assembled in order to determine if the flight recorders can be located.
The navy search was hampered by rough terrain on the seabed; some of the chasms were more than four kilometres deep. A submarine did detect a signal from and an underwater robot will now be used to try and locate the exact site and retrieve the black boxes.
The Air France jet, en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, crashed into the Atlantic after running into a storm on 1 June. All 228 people on board were killed.
