France and Brazil have urged rich industrialised nations to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80 percent from their 1990 levels by 2050.
The joint statement by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Brazilian counterpart Ignacio Lula da Silva comes in the run-up to next month's climate summit in Copenhagen. They aim to increase the pressure on the two countries with the highest emissions, the United States and China.
On Friday Brazil also vowed to cut its CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2020. The country aims to reach this target primarily by combating deforestation.
