The sultan of Malaysia's Johor state, Iskandar Ismail, who served as the country's king for five years, has died aged 77.
The sultan had been taken to hospital on Thursday for an unspecified illness. Born in 1932, he became sultan of Johor in 1981 and served as Malaysia's king from 1984 to 1989. Malaysia has a rotating monarchy, in which each state sultan serves for five years.
The sultan's eldest son, Tunku Ibrahim Ismail Iskandar, was proclaimed as the state's new sultan on Saturday morning.
