Fierce forest fires are raging across a 30-kilometre-wide area in the hills near Los Angeles.
About 14,000 hectares of forest has been destroyed, and the fires are threatening residential areas.
More than 4,000 people have been evacuated as a precaution.
Thousands of firemen have been deployed to fight the fires, but have met with little result so far.
The fires are moving fast because of the dense, bone-dry brushwood in the area.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who declared a state of emergency on Friday, has warned that the fires are "Still totally out of control".
The fires have claimed the lives of two firemen who died when their vehicle rolled off a hillside on Sunday.
