Is flying really the least green way to travel?

More about:

There are so many environmental dos and don’ts paraded about, it’s hard to know anymore what to believe and what to reject. Take travel, increasingly one of life’s necessities, but also, one of its pleasures.

The airline industry in particular gets the bad press. We've done stories on this programme about people who have quit flying forever, even though they’ll still use other forms of transport. Is aviation being unfairly demonised? Is there any truth to the idea that flying is the worst way to travel?

Earth Beat's Fiona Campbell fancied a trip to Paris, but first she had to find the greenest way to get there.

I tried the Paris connection as well, but there was NO full train-connection suggested....... How serious is this???

routeRANK 30 November 2010 - 10:56am / Switzerland

Hey Green Mama,

I just tried the search (Amsterdam -> Paris), and it gave me direct train results. Sorry, if it didn't work for you. Usually we try to give direct train results for basically all trips within Western and Central Europe. Maybe you could try the search again, and please let us know if again it doesn't work.

Curious. To-Paris calculations from where I live show lots of all-rail options. I cross-checked the NS HiSpeed site. RouteRank's pricing and travel time seem to both be higher for the dates I checked. RouteRank is pulling its rail schedule and pricing info from the French SNCF website.
Hopefully, the CO2 data is accurate.

routeRANK 30 November 2010 - 11:05am / Switzerland

Hey JW,

For this search (Amsterdam -> Paris) we get our schedule information from the ÖBB (Austrian rail) website, since they are able to give schedules for basically everywhere in Europe. The train price is estimated based on regional train fare data.

Concerning the CO2: The CO2 emission calculations are based on a model developed by the IFEU Heidelberg, and our methodology has been endorsed by the WWF. We do our best to make them as accurate as possible.

All the best
