Flu strikes Nijmegen walking event

Published on 22 July 2009 - 12:39pm
More about:

A British soldier taking part in the annual Nijmegen four-day walking event has been hospitalised with influenza symptoms. A diagnosis regarding the possibility of Mexican flu is expected later today.

Until then he has been quarantined at Heumensoord, a military camp near Nijmegen. It’s not clear what measure the local authorities will take if it turns out to be Mexican flu.

The first day of the four-day walking event passed off normally, with 473 people dropping out. That’s about the same as last year. Red Cross volunteers treated around 500 walkers, mostly for blisters. The remaining walkers started off early this morning on the second stage, which will take them through the towns of Wijchen and Beuningen.
