Flora and fauna in the Himalayas

Published on 10 August 2009 - 9:58am
More about:

The Worldwide Fund for Nature says scientists have discovered 350 new plant and animal species in the Himalaya Mountains in the past ten years.

The most striking discoveries are the world's smallest deer, a so-called 'flying' frog and a new species of monkey known as Macaca munzala. The monkeys live in India at heights of between 2000 and 3500 metres and are recognisable by their short tails. It has been more than 100 years since a new species of monkey was discovered.

The report says the researchers were extremely impressed by the biodiversity in the mountains. The Himalaya is one of the regions of the world worst affected by climate change. If something is not done to slow climate change, says the WWF, all these natural treasures will be lost.
