Floods in Sao Paulo

Published on 5 February 2010 - 9:16am
More about:

The Brazilian metropolis Sao Paulo is in the grip of a long period of heavy rainfall which started early December.

On Thursday, the city was hit by a thunderstorm which claimed the life of a 72-year-old woman who was killed when six homes were swept away by a flashflood. She was the 73rd victim since the start of the wettest summer in Sao Paulo in six decades.

A total of 34 zones of the city have been flooded. Dozens of trees have been uprooted and local television channel Bandeirantes showed footage of buses stranded with passengers waving for help. People were also seen seeking refuge on the roofs of cars.
