Police have arrested two men in their twenties on suspicion of violent behaviour during a Liberation festival in Rotterdam on 5 May. Three other suspects were arrested earlier this week. All five suspects were traced using video footage. They were known to police because of an earlier involvement with football hooliganism.
The Liberation festival, next to Rotterdam's landmark Erasmus bridge, was broken off by police after riots had erupted. The crowd then turned against the police. Some warning shots were fired after partygoers were beaten by unknown men with nail-covered sticks and one person was stabbed with a broken bottle.
After the incidents, Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said he was deeply shocked that there were people who used the Liberation festival, of all places, to pick a fight with people, apparently with the intention to cause harm.
