Two Mexican women were the first single-sex couple to get married in Mexico City on Thursday. Four other gay couples also got married on the same day.
The progressive municipality of Mexico’s capital city legalised single-sex marriage in December as the first Latin American capital.
Homosexual couples now have the same rights as heterosexual couples, including the right to adopt children.
Resistance to single-sex marriages was huge in the Roman Catholic country. The Minister of Justice wants the Supreme Court to ban single-sex marriages.
Elsewhere in the region gay marriages are a taboo, although in some places registered partnership is allowed.
In Argentina two male couples have entered marriage. A special ruling by a judge was required to seal the marriage as the law does not accommodate single-sex marriages.
