First Dutch death from Mexican flu announced

Published on 4 August 2009 - 5:56pm
More about:

The RIVM (the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment) has confirmed that a 17-year-old male has become the first person in the Netherlands to die as a result of Mexican flu.

He was already seriously sick when he contracted the virus. He died in the early hours of Tuesday but no further details are being released to preserve the privacy of his family.

Since April, the H1N1 virus has been confirmed in 663 people in the Netherlands, 512 of whom were infected abroad. Nine people have had to be admitted to hospital with the disease, and a 39-year-old man had to spend a lengthy time in intensive care. Most of the patients have now been discharged.
