A Dutch film director is making a film about Joran van der Sloot, the Dutch national who was recently arrested and charged with the murder of a young woman in Peru. Mr Van der Sloot was also the prime suspect in the case of US teenager Natalee Holloway who disappeared while on holiday on the Caribbean island of Aruba in 2005. The film which is due out next year suggests the Holloway case stinks.
According to the film's director Paul Ruven, we still don't know what happened to Ms Holloway because all the parties concerned are putting their own interests first. The film asks why her body still hasn't been found and why Van der Sloot has never been convicted of any crime. It doesn't deal with the murder of the 21-year-old Stephany Flores in Peru on 31 May this year. Van der Sloot is currently in custody in Lima awaiting trial over her murder.
No punches pulled
The film, Me & Mr Jones, doesn't paint a sympathetic picture of any of the characters. For example, Joran van der Sloot, is portrayed as a rich white youth with influential parents, who flouts the law. At the time of Natalee Holloway's disappearance, he was receiving treatment for psychological problems. He is also reported to have been involved in two cases of indecent assault.
"The film pulls no punches in showing that Joran lied. That's why the main character, the investigative journalist, breaks the law to get at the truth. He, just like Joran, doesn't abide by the law."
Mr Ruven doesn't spare the character of Natalee Holloway either. He says the image of her as some kind of holy virgin, an innocent girl, is just the way her mother wants her portrayed.
"The truth is that Natalee had a nose full of cocaine that night, was blind drunk and had been chasing blokes for days."
Extensive research
These are the facts all parties in the case want ignored - Joran van der Sloot's family, Natalee Holloway's family, and also the Aruban authorities. Mr Ruven has done extensive research to get to the bottom of the case. He says that in order to understand why there are still no real answers five years after Ms Holloway's disappearance, you need to understand the psychology and mentality of Aruba. The Caribbean island is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
"Everybody on the island knows each other. When there are elections, the candidates are often sponsored by US hotel owners. The winning candidate appoints his entire family and distant friends to important governmental positions. These people hang on to the posts for the rest of their lives."
It's this colonial background of favourism and conflict of interests that allows a young rich Dutchman to do what he likes without being brought to justice. Mr Ruven believes nobody on Aruba wants the truth to come out. It was also never the intention that Joran should end up in prison. That would damage tourism and the economy.

You're truly delusional if you think that Natalee Holloway was an innocent. She was partying to her hearts content there is no doubt about that. Of course she didn't deserve to be murdered although I think she was accidentally murdered.
I think it's terrible another dirty opportunist is making money off of Natalee's death and paying the killer even makes it worse. Aruba covered up the drugging and rapes before Natalee and then covered up her murder allowing this killer to kill again. Does the film portray Van der sloot as the murderer? As much as people love to get justice for innocent people you are innocent till proven guilty and it should of course stay that way, from what I remember there was no evidence against VDS.

I think it would be absolutely foolish for any person to believe they know/knew any of the parties involved. Including Natalee. You don't think she liked to party? Even if Natalee was a party girl that night, it could have been the first time she went all out. Most normal people do go off the deep end at some point in their young lives. It doesn't mean they are loose, drug addicts with no self control. Smart young people, as she was, don't always think about what they are doing and what would be best for them. And what about the likes of Joran, taking advantage of her regardless of her condition or state of mind. They are the worst type of person on the planet.
Avoid Aruba as if your life depended on it ... as it STILL does. The culture on Aruba and in the Netherlands no longer has a moral compass. Joran is a murderer, (Stephany is a witness to that) yet these people STILL want to drink Natalee's blood. Decency has long left these people; that try and use slander to EXCUSE their crimes. Face it, Aruba is dangerous - they will and have done anything to keep their corrupt way of life. Everybody on Aruba knows each other? What a bunch of hogwash! Prosecuting Joran would damage the island's economy? On what planet?! Someone please explain to me how it would be better for the island's tourist based economy to protect Joran van der Sloot than it would be to solve the case once and for all. Well said, Anonymous. Charlierat, whether you or I agree that tourism would be harmed by prosecuting Joran is irrelevant, in my opinion. The award winning Mr. Ruven alleges that was the mindset of the authorities at the time. I agree with you that the alleged position is not grounded in logic or facts but that doesn't prove it is untrue. Do you deny that tourism is very important to Aruba? Do you deny the entire culture of the island is at least somewhat centered around tourism? I don't see how such a small island, so dependent on tourism could avoid having tourism affect their culture. I agree with Mr. Ruven that Joran was rich, (at least by island standards), white, Dutch and the son of influential parents. I agree with Mr. Ruven that Joran's standing enabled him to get away with things that perhaps others wouldn't.
Perhaps we should all wait to see the movie before condemning the award winning Mr. Ruven's conclusions. His conclusions are not new or radical -- many have believed the same for many years and there is evidence to support them. Perhaps not enough evidence to convince you, but evidence all the same. When we see the investigation done by Mr. Ruven, how he puts the pieces together, maybe we will all agree with his conclusions about Joran's guilt. Who knows? The revelations about Natalee, on the other hand, are simply incredible. In five years, there has never been a hint of any evidence of rehab, drug use, or bed-hopping that didn't originate on the island. Is it logical or realistic that during Natalee's long weekend on the island, Aruban residents found out more about Natalee than those she'd known her whole life? A non-English speaking cab driver on Aruba knows about a stint in rehab, but those with whom she went to school, friends and neighbors had no idea? No one from Alabama (or anywhere else in America) has sold the tell-all story to this very day? It doesn't make sense. It's not credible. The fact that the award winning Mr. Ruven believed those slanderous allegations enough to repeat them indicates to me that his sources were reliable; you know, like a police chief or a newspaper editor; someone with "no reason" to lie -- or so he thought.
