Fighting ends Islamic alliance in Somali port

Published on 1 October 2009 - 2:12pm
More about:

Fierce fighting has broken out between two Islamic groups in the Somali port of Kismayo. At least nine people were killed and hundreds fled the violence.

The two groups, al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam, had agreed to share control of the port - each faction would rule for six months - but the agreement collapsed after al-Shabaab refused to relinquish office after its term expired.

The fighting brings an end to an alliance, in which the two groups joined forces against the Somali government. The government only controls the capital Mogadishu, where it has the support of African Union peace-keepers. Al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam control large parts of southern and central Somalia.
Observers believe the fighting in Kismayo gives the government an opportunity to strengthen its position.
