FIFA suspends Maradona for foul language

Published on 15 November 2009 - 8:20pm
More about:

FIFA has suspended Argentina's football coach Diego Maradona for two months for using foul language during a press conference.

He also has to pay the international football association a 17,000-euro fine.

Maradona told journalists “to suck it and keep sucking it”, after he received lots of criticism following a match in which Uruguay beat Argentina. Argentina just about managed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He apologised for his behaviour at Sunday's FIFA disciplinary hearing in Zürich. His suspension will have little impact as Argentina is not due to play in the next two months.  It does mean he will not be able to attend the final draw for the 2010 World Cup in Cape Town on 4 December.
