Federer wins French Open

Published on 7 June 2009 - 6:37pm
More about:

The Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has won the French Open, beating Sweden's Robin Söderling 6-1, 7-6, 6-4. Söderling knocked out defending champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. It is the first time that Roger Federer has taken the title at Roland Garros.

Federer now has 14 grand slam titles, equalling the record set by the US' Pete Sampras. The Swiss star is the sixth tennis player to have won all four grand slam tournaments.

On Saturday, Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova won the women's title at Roland Garros, beating fellow Russian Dinara Safina in two sets, 6-4 and 6-2. It was Kuznetsova's second major title following her victory at the US Open in 2004. Although Safina is the world's leading player she has never won a Grand Slam title. Last year she lost the Open France title to the Serb Ana Ivanovic.
