Favourites knocked out of US Open

Published on 4 September 2009 - 9:31am
More about:

At the US Open in New York on Thursday, fifth-seeded Jelena Jankovic was beaten 6-3 6-7 7-6 by Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.

The 24-year old tennis-player, last year's runner-up at Flushing Meadows, learned before the match that her grandmother had passed away in Serbia. Jankovic told the press afterwards that she was very close to her grandmother and "emotionally I was not on court".

Earlier, spectators at the US Open were surprised when US teenager Melanie Oudin beat fourth-seeded Russian Elena Dementjeva 5-7 6-4 6-3. Oudin was hailed as the new sweetheart of US tennis as the 70th -ranked seed gave a strong performance, knocking out her Russian opponent.
