Leader of the Belgian far-right Vlaams Belang party, Filip Dewinter, has called on the Dutch government to take action against a Dutch website that has published calls for his death.
According to Belgian newspaper De Morgen, the Muslim website www.ansaar.nl features texts arguing Mr Dewinter should have his head cut off and calling for “death to this kafir [non-Muslim]”.
Mr Dewinter has written a letter of protest to Dutch Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin. “I assume these texts are just as illegal as they are in Belgium,” he writes. “Unfortunately in your country there have already been victims of Muslim terror. For this reason such statements should be dealt with as soon as possible.” Mr Dewinter’s comments relate to the killing of Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh, who was murdered by Muslim extremist Mohammed Bouyeri in 2004, having previously received threats.
The Justice Ministry has said it is taking the matter seriously and will respond to Mr Dewinter promptly. It is not the first time Mr Dewinter has been threatened for his extreme opinions on ethnic minorities. His anti-Muslim stance echoes that of Dutch Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders.
