Elections for the European Parliament are being held in six EU countries today. Voters are going to the polls in Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Cyprus, Malta and Latvia. In Italy, Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right party Popolo della Liberta is expected to win.
Voting for the European elections took place in Great Britain and the Netherlands on Thursday. In the Netherlands, Geert Wilders' populist Freedom Party was the biggest winner. Although the Christian Democrats lost seats, it is still the largest Dutch party in the European Parliament. The Freedom Party campaigned on a "say no to Europe" ticket.
The results of the European elections in Great Britain will be announced on Sunday. Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour Party suffered a devastating defeat in the regional elections held in England at the same time. The remaining EU member states will go to the polls on Sunday.
