The European Union appears willing to meet the demands of dairy farmers facing exceptionally low milk prices.
Brussels has announced it will buy up thousands of tonnes of milk powder and butter to support the EU dairy sector. The German government has promised a tax cut for dairy farmers.
In France, dairy farmers are holding their second national day of protests in a week. Angry farmers have blocked dairy factories in 20 departments.
France is demanding the EU guarantee a stable milk price.
In Brussels, about 900 European Dairy farmers accompanied by cows and tractors have held a demonstration for a better milk price. They are demanding that Brussels adjust the milk quotas and introduce subsidies for the sector.
The EU recently decided to liberalise milk production, as a result, the price of milk dropped by about 30 percent to below cost price in less than a year.
