European Union leaders have unanimously nominated
José
Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, for another five years in the job. However, even their official nomination does not make it certain he will serve a second term.
The European parliament still has to approve Mr Barroso's re-appointment, and this is not a foregone conclusion. MEPs from socialist and green parties are fiercely opposed to the Christian Democrat remaining head of the European Commission.
