The European Commission has earmarked 54 million euros for humanitarian aid to countries in the Horn of Africa.
European Development Commissioner Louis Michel says the aid is necessary to save lives. The region is suffering from extreme weather conditions and continuing armed conflicts.
Somalia will receive 13 million euros in aid, Eritrea 3 million and Ethiopia 6 million euros' worth. In addition, 22 million euros has been earmarked for food aid and 10 million euros to help fight drought in Kenya and Uganda.
