Ethnic rioting ends in Uganda's capital

Published on 12 September 2009 - 6:09pm
More about:

Order appears to have been restored to Uganda's capital Kampala after two days of rioting in which at least 14 people, including a police officer, were killed.

The trouble began on Thursday because of a dispute between the Ugandan government and the king of Buganda, who leads an ethnic group. Buganda is one of the four old kingdoms making up Uganda. Although they have had no formal power since independence in 1962, the kingdoms remain an important force within Ugandan society.
