Energy companies prop up Myanmar regime

Published on 10 September 2009 - 2:57pm
More about:

An investigation by EarthRights International alleges that energy companies Total and Chevron are the main financers of the military regime of Myanmar (formerly Burma). The regime has earned billions from a gas deal with the two companies.

The money made from the deal (3.3 billion euros) has been deposited in a secret bank account in Singapore, therefore bypassing international sanctions against Myanmar. As a result the organisation says sanctions against the junta have been less effective.

EarthRights also reports forced labour, murder and corruption by troops guarding pipelines at the Yadana gas field. The human rights organisation says Total and Chevron have turned a blind eye to these human rights violations.
