The End of RNW Classical - Thank you for listening

Published on : 24 May 2012 - 8:00am | By (photo: RNW)
More about:

Following last year’s political developments in the Netherlands, leading to severe budget cutbacks in the cultural domain, RNW’s budget was reduced to 30%. As a result of this RNW Classical will cease to exist. We will remain online until 31 May 2012, playing your favourite classical music.

As a logical extension of the activities of the Music Department of Radio Netherlands Worldwide, RNW Classical started streaming in June 2010, offering the best of Dutch classical composers and performers. Aiming at the serious classical music lover, we programmed complete works only, limiting spoken word to a minimum. In order to bridge the language gaps for RNW’s target regions a Chinese and Spanish version were launched in 2011.

It is with deep regret that we give up the work we love so much, especially since we feel that the station had yet to come to flourish. We would like to thank you for all the hours you chose to listen to RNW Classical and hope you enjoyed the music!

Very sad about this decision. I feel Hans Haffmans a very good and strongly cultivated musical speaker a genius explaining in a minute very complex masterpieces: BRAVO! Luca

I have been listening to RNW since December of last year when I got my Glaxy S2 cellphone. Beautiful music, professionally presented. Then, a couple of month ago, I could no longer receive RNW. My sister, in California, just informed me yesterday of the end of your programme. I am very sorry. Hopefully, the political scene will change over time so that you can again resume this beautiful and worthwhile service. Thank you.

Please reconsider your decision and bring back "Live at the Concertgebouw".

I do hope this is only a temporary setback as this program was very popular with many of our listeners on KVNO-FM in Omaha Nebraska.

Ken Groeppe 29 September 2012 - 9:20pm / U.S.

It is indeed unfortunate that we now live in a world so dominated by money and philistinism. Nowhere is that more apparent than here in the U.S., where politicians cater to the uneducated anti-intellectuals, who hate knowledge in all its forms. It is unfortunate that this movement is also spreading to Europe, which we in this country have looked to as a beacon of knowledge and perspective. It certainly bodes ill for the future of our civilization.

He, er is weer muziek vandaag bij RNW Classical! Heel fijn.

Nicole

I'm listening to the LIVE! at the Concertgebouw(?) on public radio right now. Does this only affect the online station? So sad to hear. Hope you are back soon.

Herman Duizend 7 September 2012 - 5:56pm / Austria

Being a dutchman living in Austria I listened to the Classical Music every time again. It's a shame that living outside of Holland we're cut of the Dutch cultural life.

Fabio Peñaranda 30 August 2012 - 8:00pm / Colombia

I was listen the music in Colombia, i wanto to say thank you for that and i will wait for your return.

Simon Fodden 30 August 2012 - 6:06pm / Canada

I'm very sad indeed that RNW Classical has shut down. It was without a doubt the best internet classical station, and one that I urged on my friends. It's a shame that it fell victim to budget cuts.

Joseph A. Appleyard 27 August 2012 - 4:13pm / USA

I am disappointed at the cancellation of Radio Netherlands classical program. I have been listening to the broadcast in my office all day long for the past two years. It is the best classical music program I know of. Since I studied for four years in the Netherlands I have felt an appreciative bond with RNW and regret the loss of this amenity. Thank you for providing it while it lasted.

I hate it when excellence does not have the opportunity to flourish

Anonymous 24 August 2012 - 5:03pm / United States-Ohio

What is happening ? RNW Classical came back on the air for us through yesterday: now you are gone again......Please, please return to the air! We listen all day to your wonderful music!!

Helio 15 August 2012 - 5:48pm / Brazil

I'm so sorry. This is a big loss for us. I listened the radio while I was studying. Thanks for the good moments.

LinC 3 August 2012 - 11:38pm / USA

I'm so sorry you had to take this program off the air. I thought my local public radio station had just stopped carrying it. I hope you will be fully funded in the future and be able to resume this much-loved program. Best of luck.

Victor de Jarnette 18 July 2012 - 3:09am / United States

I live in Oklahoma. Your broadcasts were the best. Thank you.

Anonymous 8 July 2012 - 12:28pm / Israel

VERY DISAPPOINTED. In Israel your music is broadcasted every Saturday afternoon, and it is very refreshing to listen to, and the choices are always great. Hope you air the classical channel again soon!

W. Kanning 23 June 2012 - 2:08pm / Nederland

Living in the Netherlands I did not know that the RNW had a classical programme.

Michael Leahy 23 June 2012 - 1:34am / New York City

This is like the stilling of the voice of an old friend. My thanks to the people who made RNW Classical a place of admirable musicianship, lively programming, and beauty. You gave a gift to the world.

Lina E 22 June 2012 - 10:52am / Colombia

I had been listened RNW classical for more than two or even six hours all weekdays in my homecountry (Colombia), USA and Europe. It was always the best classic radio station everywhere. I moved to Holland recently and had he expectation to listened here but didn't have the chance... RNW Classical outside air is a big lost for classic music lovers! I miss it and hope it comes back... Thanks for such a nice selection of musicians and composers!

Maura 20 June 2012 - 9:19pm / Nebraska, USA

This is very sad. For me out here in Nebraska, RNW's presentation of such terrific music so beautifully performed was a great contribution The Netherlands made to the world. I hope you are refunded soon.

Veronica Ng 18 June 2012 - 11:10pm / Hong Kong student in California

It's a pity that RNW has to be closed. I love hearing to this station a lot. Hope it can be reopened again some time later. May all who worked for RNW can find a new path~

Rodrigo Alejandro Alonso Ortiz 18 June 2012 - 9:00pm / Colombia

It's very sad, I join you in your pain about it. Hope that soon you can recover, the station's and Dutchland's economy recovers pretty soon. I'm going to miis you cause you have been always my mate in both, my studys and work. Thanks for making classic music last worldwide. Farewell.

jim wolf 16 June 2012 - 11:39pm / USA

I have listened often here in Boulder, Colorado, and will miss your classical offerings on line. I hope that when the Netherlands economy gets stronger, you will resume your classical streaming.

chris mayo 16 June 2012 - 6:45pm / ireland

Only recently found your fantastic station and now it's being shut down. That is a great shame as it's the best that I've found. Just my luck! Hope some one reconsiders that terrible decision.

LUCAS TELES CORREA 14 June 2012 - 1:22pm / Brazil

I'm very sad because of that! I have had some minuts of good music listening RNW, and now... But I can say: thank you!

LUCAS TELES CORREA 14 June 2012 - 1:18pm / Brasil

What a pitty! This is a not so much good note.
