Elections in Mozambique

Published on 28 October 2009 - 12:14pm
More about:

Mozambique is holding parliamentary and presidential elections today.

The poll is not expected to bring any surprises. None of the 17 parties and two alliances taking part in the elections are expected to pose a serious threat to Frelimo, which has been in power for 34 years. Frelimo strongly benefits from serious discord among the opposition. Part of the main opposition party Renamo has split off to form the MDM, the Democratic Movement of Mozambique. Ruling President Armando Guebuza is expected to win a second term. His main rivals are Renamo candidate Afonso Dhlakama and MDM founder Daviz Simango.
