Toys are some of the most common purchases made during the holiday season, and many - if not most - of these toys have been shipped in from far-away factories, along with their bulky disposable packaging. So, what kind of sustainable options are out there for toy shoppers? What about toys made of… garbage??
As reporter Shannon Young discovered, this is exactly what’s going on in the workshop of Miguel Ramirez in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Every year, Mexico celebrates its independence day with huge parties… and enough garbage to keep Mr. Ramirez building his magical metal toys for a whole year. He collects empty spray cans – used in popular foam fights – and brings them home to his workshop where they will be turned into shiny airplanes, helicopters, trains, antique cars, or UFOs, all with moving parts and some with noise-makers.

That's interesting, I've heard many stories regarding recycled garbage, it's the first time I hear about someone who's making toys out of scrap metal. I think his work is admirable and I feel sorry there aren't many people here following his example. The DC bulk trash pick up collects so much garbage that he could build very successful business if he lived nearby.
This was an excellent article. I always like following this reporter's stories. Her diction is exquisite and her photos are great! I like her personal, human interest stories like this.
