The death toll from the earthquake off the Indonesian island of Java has increased to 40. Dozens, or perhaps hundreds, of buildings have collapsed and up to several thousand damaged. Around 5000 people have been evacuated.
The earthquake registered 7.0 on the Richter scale. The epicentre lay 200 kilometres south of the capital Jakarta, at a depth of dozens of kilometres under the seabed.
Tsunami warnings have been withdrawn; only one small tsunami was reported.
