The entire Dutch population is behind its national "Orange" football squad, and the royal family is no exception.
On Monday Crown Prince Willem-Alexander organised a photo session at which his three daughters in particular were the stars. Princess Amalia, next in line for the throne after her father, was seen - and heard -joyfully blowing her orange-coloured vuvuzela.
Unlike many a Dutch home, the villa of Prince Willem-Alexander, Princess Máxima and their three daughters in Wassenaar has not been decked out in orange. But the ruling House of Orange appears duly impressed by the achievements of the Dutch squad so far.
The three princesses and their parents obligingly posed for dozens of photographers and camera crews. But once the official bit was over, Princesses Amalia (aged 6), Alexia (5) and Ariane (3) were 'released' and began chasing an orange-coloured football. "They are watching everything," Prince Willem-Alexander said about his daughters. "They are very involved with the whole thing."
The crown prince and Princess Máxima have meanwhile travelled to South Africa to attend the semi-final against Uruguay in Cape Town. Their daughters stayed behind at the family's Wassenaar home. "It would be inappropriate. The match begins at half past eight, and that is really too late for such young children," the parents said.
