Dutch public transport - buses 'still unsafe'

Published on 13 March 2010 - 9:18am
More about:

The Dutch provinces and regional public transport companies are failing to tackle aggression on local buses, according to an investigation conducted by Dutch media.

Eighteen months ago, aggression against bus drivers in the town of Gouda prompted then Transport Minister Guusje ter Horst to create a taskforce to seek solutions for the growing problem.

Drivers in other regions were also being threatened. Since then only Limburg and Utrecht - two of the country's 12 provinces - have taken any measures.

In Groningen and Drenthe, in the northeast of the country, the situation has even worsened since a new transport company removed security cameras from buses. The provinces, which are responsible for organising local public transport, say are there not enough funds to address the problem. They also argue that security on public transport is a matter for police and judicial authorities.
