Dutch: no love for Valentine’s Day

Published on 12 February 2010 - 5:57pm
More about:

The Dutch are not particularly fond of Valentine’s Day according to a web survey published today by research company Trendbox. The international day of love ranks twenty-seventh on a list of their favourite annual events.

In the survey seven out of ten Dutchmen say that Valentine’s Day is ‘unattractive’ to them. Phrases they use to describe the day are ‘juvenile’, ‘commercial’ and ‘of little substance’.

Dutch women are more prone to give Valentine’s Day a positive review. Forty percent say that they are excited about celebrating it, whilst only twenty-five percent of Dutch men share their enthusiasm.

Even though the majority of interviewees were not fond of Valentine’s Day, forty percent indicated that they don't let the day pass unnoticed. Their reasons for observing the event differ, some care about celebrating love and affection, others indicate that they pay attention to Valentine’s Day to avoid conflict with loved ones.
