8. The escapist – Waylon
Dutch singer Waylon was born Willem Bijkerk, but he named himself after his musical hero Waylon Jennings. He even managed to actually work and perform with the great man, but that career was tragically cut short by the premature death of Jennings in 2002. After entering (and losing) the Dutch pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, Willem/Waylon joined Holland’s Got Talent in 2008. He finished second. In 2010, he finally made it big with his debut album, and The Escapist is the first single off his new album.
10. Maniac in love – B-Yentl & Tarif
B-Yentl is something of a phenomenon in the Netherlands. Constantly ignored by radio and TV, she still manages to score hit after hit. Maniac in Love is her third hit single off her album Persistence, which was issued in May. All three singles and the album have achieved gold and platinum status on downloads alone. Still, hardly anyone knows her, due to the lack of radio and TV airtime. We here at RNW wonder: What does it take for an artist to get noticed these days…?
