The Dutch motoring association ANWB is polling its members on the introduction of a new road charging system. Under the new system motorists will pay per kilometre rather than pay a general road tax.
On Friday, Traffic Minister Camiel Eurlings said he would abide by the wishes of the members of the motoring association. His comments have angered the left-wing opposition.
Non-members are also able to voice their opinions, although their vote will not carry the same weight. The website was unable to cope with the number of internet visitors on Saturday afternoon.
The poll will be held over a period of four weeks. Critics say the conroversial poll is not a fair reflection of public opinion.
Mass circulation daily, De Telegraaf, which has fiercely campaigned against the system in recent months, launched its own poll on Saturday.
