Iran has warned the Netherlands not to interfere with Iranian affairs.
The warning came after Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Verhagen summoned Iran's chargé d'affaires ad interim to the Netherlands to account for the violence in the aftermath of the Iranian election. Speaking in Jerusalem, Mr Verhagen said he was outraged at Iran's objection in the light of the brutal violence being used by the Iranian security forces and the killing of demonstrators.
Minister Verhagen said Iran should comply with international human rights treaties, also agreed to by the Iranian government in Tehran. He has called for a meeting of European Union foreign ministers to take place this weekend, to discuss ways of preventing Iran from pitting EU countries against each other. He said the EU should exert pressure on Iran for the way in which it treats its citizens.
