Dutch inmates protest against tighter rules

Published on 20 March 2010 - 10:12am
More about:

Around 40 inmates in the Dutch city of Sittard have protested against tighter prison rules that came into force on 1 March.

After their daily break outside, the inmates refused to return to their cells unless they were granted a meeting with the jail's director. The prison refused to meet the demand and the inmates ended their action after two hours.

A new, tougher prison regime was introduced on 1 March across the country. Since then, stricter rules apply to sports, showering and visiting hours.

The board of the prison, located in the southern city of Sittard, said it was not in a position to change the rules, as these were a matter of national policy.
