Queen Beatrix and Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende have offered their condolences to the Indonesian government and population for the victims of the earthquake that hit the island of Sumatra on Wednesday, killing at least 1,100 people.
In a letter addressed to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the Dutch prime minister voices his shock at the death toll. The Netherlands will give the International Red Cross half a million euros in aid for Indonesia.
