Dutch Freedom Party: scrap RNW and public TV

Published on 6 April 2010 - 8:47am
More about:

The Dutch anti-Islamic Freedom Party, led by opposition MP Geert Wilders, says it wants to cut the number of public broadcast channels.

The three public TV networks should be reduced to one, and Radio Netherlands Worldwide, the country's international broadcaster, should be abolished altogether. The party argues in its election manifesto that these measures are necessary to free up the financial means needed to pay for health care.

Mr Wilders said that commercial broadcasters are facing unfair competition from public broadcasters who receive 700 million euros in subsidies annually. "We'd better economise here rather than in the health and social care sectors," Mr Wilders told the Dutch daily AD on Tuesday.

About 43 million of the government's broadcasting budget goes to Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

Grassroots view differs
Observers say the Freedom Party stance towards public broadcasters is remarkable. TV ratings expert René van Dammen, who researched people's viewing behaviour in relation to their political orientation, found earlier that Freedom Party voters watch more TV than average. Their favourite programmes are broadcast on public channels, and include the Sunday evening sports programme, Studio Sport.

Pre-election polls show falling figures for the Freedom Party, which was sidelined in local coalition talks despite its huge gains in the cities of Almere and The Hague in the March local elections. Other parties declined to cooperate with the Freedom Party because of its 'non-negotiable' demand for a headscarf ban, aimed at Islamic women. National elections have been scheduled for 9 June.

I agree with mr. Wilders after I heard this morning a RNW journalist complaining from Sri Lanka that the RNW team was robbed. The team was on an investigation trip in Sri Lanka. I think it is a holiday for these people paid by us, the taxpayer. To investigate the freedom of speech in Sri Lanka, what will be the next stop? Antiqua? Virgin Islands or Tuvalu maybe? Waste of money and I'm curious to know how much this trip costs. Accomodation in 5 star hotel and a lot of technicians. Stop this spilling of tax money.

I would like to know what the dutch expats think of this proposal to cut off RNW made by Wilders and propose them to write and express their voices from all over the world.
A public broadcaster's mission is to give a high level public service, and in particular an international public broadcaster is well aware that its main goal is to keepa tight contact with all the expats who are living, for several different reasons, all over the world and to offer to the international audience a perspective on views and news from its own country.
Being a public broadcaster is like being a flagship for the own country, offering an image of the country so strong and so clear that all over the world is perceived by everyone.
And being a successful international public broadcaster whose distinguished freedom of speech is well renowned all over the world may give a chance to some politicians to try to ride the wave .and eventually when they are not able to do it they are strongly against it!!!

David Berridge 6 April 2010 - 4:50pm / Canada

Geert and his gang are now attempting to bite the hand that entertains it! With all the complaints about the costs to Canadian taxpayers that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation incurs, this expense is not seen as an absolute alternative to funding health care revenues from the Canadian government to Canada's provinces and territories. What does Geert really want the funds spent on RNW for? All his demands and complaints concerning contemporary Dutch society are made out to be in an absolute zero-sum fashion, giving the impression of a crisis on all fronts. There is no alternative solution or creative thinking on any issue, so as to bring an artificial justification to the PVV's existence and policies. Perhaps Sir Rupert Murdoch can bring about more sports coverage and higher cable television costs to Dutch tv viewers in order to save on taxes!!

I totally disagree with the proposal made by this party.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide is a leading authority for freedom of speech and always offer listeners from all over the world an exemple of how public broadcasters should spend their budgets...

What a country without an international radio broadcasting might be? What about the expats who could no longer listen to the journalists reportages from RNW?

What about the world listeners who so much appreciate this international radio service?

The more countries became close minded the less they defend international public broadcasting.

jasmin 6 April 2010 - 12:14pm

I am not surprised by this manifesto. Economics might be one reason, but I feel that Wilders knows about the anti-Wilders and pro-Islamic approach of RNW. So, pray hard that Dutch Freedom Party does not win..or...try being unbiased in your news reporting...BTW, I wish RNW the best, it is the best site, I know of....God bless RNW and your staff!
