A row has broken out between the Dutch football association KNVB and top German team Bayern Munich after Dutch striker Arjen Robben returned from his holidays with an injury. During a medical check, Robben was found to have a muscle injury in his left thigh. The striker will need two months to recover.
Bayern Munich say the injury was caused during the World Cup in South Africa. The team argues Robben returned to play for the Dutch squad too quickly after a hamstring injury he sustained in a friendly match against Hungary, just before the competition. "The aggressive treatment then has taken its toll," says Bayern doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt.
'Irresponsible'
Normally, players need six to eight weeks to recover from a hamstring injury, but Robben returned to the game after only three weeks of treatment by Dutch physiotherapist Dick van Toorn. "It was irresponsible for Arjen (Robben) to play at the World Cup," says the German doctor.
Dick van Toorn thinks it must be the same injury. The KNVB says Bayern Munich were informed of the situation and knew that there was a risk if he played in the World Cup. The football association says it discussed Robben's revalidation treatment with the German club.
'Wrong diagnosis'
Bayern Munich's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is furious. "Once again a club has to pay the consequences for a national team. And, what is worse, for the wrong diagnosis."
Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal told Dutch public broadcaster NOS on Monday that he was concerned by the possible consequences of the star player's fast recovery. He doubted whether Robben will be treated by Mr Van Toorn again.
