Dutch EU elections boost for Geert Wilders

Published on : 3 June 2009 - 9:21pm | By Davion Ford
More about:

In the Netherlands, Geert Wilders' far right Freedom Party (PVV) appears to be the biggest winner of the European Union elections.

Late Thursday night, with almost 25 percent of the votes counted, the PVV was on course of gaining five seats in the European Parliament. It equalled Christian Democrats CDA, which lost two. The PvdA Labour party was set to lose four of its current seven seats.

The conservative VVD and liberal pro-European D66 both took three seats, with the VVD losing one seat and D66 winning two. GreenLeft and the Christian Union-SGP coalition remained steady at two seats each. The PvdD (Animals Rights Party) appeared to be about to win its first parliamentary seat in Brussels.

There were 25 Dutch seats to be contested in the EU elections. Five years ago, the figure was 27.   Turnout for the elections was 40 percent, a fraction higher than for the last EU elections five years ago.

If the forecasted results stand, then Dutch voters have given the Freedom Party a solid base, which may allow Mr Wilders to push ahead with anti-immigration initiatives. Mr Wilders is known for his anti-Islam stance and his outspoken critical view on Europe. His party has vowed to prevent Turkey from ever joining the European Union.

The PVV's share of the vote is around 15 percent - if this result were replicated in national elections then Geert Wilders' party would be one of the biggest in the Netherlands. Analysts put the success in the European elections for Wilders down to his clear anti-European stand. In Rotterdam the PVV became the biggest party with 22 percent.

Citizens in the United Kingdom also went to the polls today, but those results will not be released until Sunday when most of the other 27 EU member states vote.

More than 375 million people are eligible to vote in the EU parliamentary election, but opinion polls indicate high voter apathy and the turnout is predicted to be low.

Jasmine are you now suggesting that Europe should do to the muslims what was done to your family? Two wrongs dont make a right. I have constantly stated here that I am christian but that doesnt mean that I should hate another religion. Infact I have some misgivings about some of the more hardline positions of some muslim sects but the way to solve that is through dialogue and peaceful engagement. To say that a whole religion should be banned or deported is very dangerous. What if next Wilders decides the real problem is the many hindu people who are coming to the Netherlands through the knowledge program being encouraged by the immigration authorities. Remember Hitler started with the Jews then it went to the Poles and the whole of Eastern Europe and finally even the Dutch and French were conquered. This politics that are based on hating a certain group of people are always dangerous because they are addictive. Wilders for example will eventually ask to deport all immigrants not only muslim ones. Infact he has now changed his tune slightly he is talking of muslims who commit crimes to make his policy more palatable but anyone who knows Wilders knows that once he is in power it will go beyond that.

If you read my posts carefully and don't try read in between the lines, you will know exactly what I mean. That is that all religions should exercise compassion and restraint in equal amount and nowhere have I suggested what you say. Nevertheless, I am shocked at your casual response on the displacement of my 400,000 community out of which nearly 1000 are my near relatives and their extended families..Do you know the trauma of fleeing at midnight with bare minimum things with your scared family, leaving all behind and starting from a scratch in a refugee camp, in your own country just because a certain religious group wants to see you dead or fled? Francois, I want other countries to learn from those who have suffered. I appreciate your concern, admiration and love for Muslims. Hope they reach up to your expectations..Good Luck Europe..I can say no more, knowing well where the priorities of Europe lie..We Hindus, do not expect alms or pity from you, we are too proud for that but I want the world to know how we have suffered due to your pet community..

Dear Sister Jasmin I am an fellow Indian and have indepth knowldge of how compassianate Hindus are. I am one Christian in India always pray to God that if I have another birth it should be in India. This europeans are zeor awarness about our nation & culture. They dont know before the Gebeva convention five thousands years ago we had laws regarding war. They dont know that even at war our kings never harmed elders, women, childrens what else non combatant. The dont know how The Great Prithviraj let free the Gori at the first Panipat war & by the next war Prithviraj got imprisoned by Gori and killed during captivity. This europeans will never learn from history and our country is best example. Now this same people trying to harvesting souls in India by forgetting that the already harvested souls in America & the west is jumping from basket. I dont think there will be any use in educating this half baked europians about the imminent danger what they are going to face. One day this politicaly correct west & America will come to our countries as refugees for sure. God bless all democracies in the world.

Amen to Francois (06/14/2009 - 05:31). Sarah Palin is the face of fascism - Christian Fascism - in the United States.

Francoise, I'm from Brazil following the news form Europe Election...I love Europe! I hope the best... I totally agree with you. The EU can stregthens their power with the union of nations. I support not only the Turkey issue, but every country that successfully carryout a whole host of reforms. This should be the condition for joining the EU. Good look for all you europeans.
François. 14 June 2009 - 4:31am
The return of xenophobia and fascism is on it's way back in Europe. The new Hitler in Wilders is arising. Let's remember that Hitler was also a great orator who rose on the populism of preaching hatred against people. Jasmine I am surprised that you seem to be caving in to hate and xenophobia couched as freedom of speech. The white supremacists are well and truly present on this pages. See how they are gathering supporting the BNP and PVV. A dark age is beckoning from Romania where the gypsies or should I say the Roma are being persecuted to Turkey the most moderate moslim nation. The Europeans asked Turkey to carryout a whole host of reforms in order to join the EU. Now that the Turks have fulfilled all their demands they openly come out and say Turkey is not one of them. That is the height of hypocricy. Yes the white supremacists who enslaved, colonised and segregated people of colour for centuries have made a grand return this time claiming to be victims. Another holocaust beckons.

What utter nonsense. Francois you need to get your head out of your post modern liberal behind and learn about Islamic imperialism through the last 14 centuries. You know, the Arab jihad that islamised the Hoy land and almost overran France, followed by the Ottoman jihad that islamised what was Christian Anatolia and pushed right into Europe only to be halted at the siege of Vienna (september 11 1683 by the way). You want someone to put Hitler in the shade? Got one for ya - the good old Prophet himself, who was a terrorist, torturer and murderer among many other calumnies. You quote Turkey, where have you been, it's clinging to secularism by its fingertips! Wilders stands for equality of the sexes, human rights and freedom of speech, not much like Hitler there then? He simply wants to stop the islamisation of Europe and in that he has the support of just about every sane individual in the West. Hey, but why should I bother, people like you need therapy, not reasoned argument.
jasmin 21 June 2009 - 6:25pm
Francois, I come from a country which was divided on the basis of religion. I know what destruction it caused and is still causing...Just because our politicians are weak and only know how to increase their votebanks, giving little attention to the side effects of supporting one section of the society over the other...In my country a Hindu is a captive:he cannot speak, he cannot retaliate, he can only get killed and if he arises, the whole world is after his life...Now this is not justice...In a play field, all are equal and this is what I say..Either leave this divisive politics and live in peace OR face the other too. You know 400,000 Hindus were forced out of Indian Kashmir to make it a Muslim majority state for the world to see...and no action was taken by our government..my family was one of them...

Never trust an infantile politician who is a nationalist. Politics is usually the executive expression of human immaturity.
Anonymous 10 June 2009 - 8:21pm
Bravo ! Thank you for NOT referring to Geert Wilders as a right wing extremist xenophobic fascist dangerous nazi nut job. Keep up the good work !

Tell me about it! We've just discovered this in the USA. Never place your trust in a hopemonger.

Call this a discussion?
jasmin 7 June 2009 - 5:45pm
Nationalism is not a disease....But when you promote people of one religion over others, appease them unnecessarily, spoon feed them, allow them to commit crimes against humanity, and follow them and ignore their misdeeds...That mentality is a disease...Geert only wants equality, in freedom of expression and compassion among all religions...What is bad about it?
George Kay 10 June 2009 - 10:07pm
Jasmin! That is why Wilders was received with open arms in Great Britain! Tell your stories to Mother The Goose.
Andreas 7 June 2009 - 12:45am
Perhaps there's HOPE for Europe yet! Congrats to Wiler and the PVV!
George Kay 6 June 2009 - 8:32pm
Wilders is nothing more but a silly cock crowing on his own stinking dunghill. Nationalism is an infantile disease; it is the measles of mankind.

At this juncture what else can be expected? With a forty per cent turnout of the electorate, this was an easy situatuation for the PVV and other like-minded parties to exploit toards an entry into the EU Parliament. This is not however, a referendum on the agenda of Wilders or any other such ideological fellow travellers, as other contributors responding to this article would have it.
BUNDESPOPEL 5 June 2009 - 6:23am
Good Morning, Netherlands. HURRAY TO GEERT WILDERS AND HIS PARTY. GRAND VICTORY. Netherlands stays democratic.

So long for the "dutch values" like been open to the other people and religions. Right now PVV has allready 5 seats in EP and is very close to CDA. So welcome to the new "values": We hate Turkey just because it's a muslim country and we are just so great that we wont allow others to live with us....
