There were scenes of deep disappointment as Dutch football fans collectively tried to come to terms with the defeat to Spain at the World Cup final.
An estimated 100,000 orange-clad supporters had gathered at Amsterdam's Museum Square to watch Spain score four minutes from the end of extra time. After the final whistle, some burst into tears, others looked up at the starless night in disbelief or kicked against security fences.
The crowd then dispersed quickly and quietly. Many of them will return in better spirits on Tuesday, to give the Dutch team a warm public welcome after what's been another great achievement for Dutch football.
Among pundits and punters alike, there was general acknowledgment that the Netherlands had lost to a better team. Also that the Dutch could have won the World Cup nevertheless, if only Arjen Robben had managed to flick the ball past goalkeeper Íker Casillas in two one-on-one encounters. And if only English ref Howard Webb had spotted a foul against the Dutch and a deflection in the lead-up to the Spanish goal.
Frustration levels reached boiling point in several other cities in the Netherlands. Some minor disturbances were reported from Utrecht, Deventer, Apeldoorn and Zwolle, where police made several arrests. Around 40 people were arrested after more serious riots in The Hague, but overall the night passed off without major incidents.

What can you expect from a Brit, a country that’s only contribution for the last 40 years to international football, is hooliganism?
Everyone knows that the real winner is Paul "the Oracle" Octopus! In the second half with all the whinnig and expressions of sore losing by the Dutch, I thought that I was watching the French national team!! The Dutch were even poorer losers after the final whistle with the looks of contempt on their faces!! The team played as a reflection of the society the Netherlands has become over the last two years or so, and that is the greatest defeat of all.
See the match again, please.
Perhaps this time "mediocre" Netherlands wins with their kiks in the chest (or perhaps this time yellow cards becames red ones, as they should be).
This is soccer, men, not "American Football"!
God save the Queen! ;)

Both teams are world champions! Holland is world champion in yellow cards and Spain in soccer!
Orange players were over the top, they were very agresive and just complained Webb´s decissions. Netherlands forgot to play football, that´s all about: FOOTBALL!
Please do not despair...there is another day. Let them enjoy the fake victory, we know you are the winners Oranje!
Typical British with their rotten teeth, smelly breath. They seem Always ready to stab in the back their friends and allies if they make a profit from it.
Dear Howard Webb, Thanks For Ruining The 2010 World Cup
By Caleb M. (Featured Columnist) on July 12, 2010 116
So I'm a huge football fan...real American football, not soccer. However like many various sports fans and regular ol' civilians across the world, I've caught World Cup fever. I watched at least five full length matches, and bits and pieces of nearly all of them.
I was really excited for the final World Cup match. Two brand new teams, bright orange uniforms, Tivo'ing the commercials...it was gonna be great. I'd even gotten in the mood by attending a Portland Timbers soccer game the night before.
And after that "hard fought" 1-0 match, I realized something.
That was by and far the worst sporting event I'd ever watched in my entire life. And there's but one person to blame for this: Howard Webb.
This man single-handedly killed my World Cup fever. Well, him and 11 cheating, utterly disgusting Spanish soccer players.
So I'd like to write a little something to show my gratitude for Mr. Webb.
Dear Howard Webb,
As you well know the World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world. It gives even American football fans like me the fever, and is known to unite countries together in a way that not even the Olympics can accomplish.
I rooted for the US until they were eliminated by Ghana. From then on any game I watched I just rooted for the underdog. The same was true in today's championship match between the Netherlands and Spain. I have no ties to either team, but it looked as if the Dutch were underdogs, so I went with them. Plus, their coffee is better.
You sir carded nine Dutch players throughout the match. Only two, TWO out of the nine were reasonable bookings. Mr. Webb—you are a bloody idiot who does not deserve to referee any World Cup event, much less my high school indoor soccer team.
You caused Spain to win the game. What was it? You hate orange? You're nationalistic?
Whatever the reason, you ruined the game. Several times you happened to "miss" fouls by Spanish players. I wasn't aware goalies knocking the ball out was rewarded in a goal kick, and that tackling players was somehow legal in soccer! Must be a Spain thing.
Mr. Webb I say again, you ruined the World Cup. I hated Spain five minutes in for starting that flopping crap, but you believed it!?! Every time that jackass with the long hair fell over, there you were, carding Dutch players like you're getting paid for it. Which I'm sure you were.
That was the worst officiating I've ever witnessed in any sporting event I've ever seen. Congratulations...I hope Spain paid you well.
With all sincerity,
Your biggest hater

@Theo Tamis....The title should have been: Dutch defeated - Referee shatters orange dream. Spaniards were his favourites from the first whistle. If you look retrospectively, Howard Webb did his best to give maximum opportunities to the Spanish to goal. It is a different matter that they were not able to goal, because Steklenburg was sharp and secondly they did not know how to shoot a goal, no wonder they scored so low in the whole tournament. And the moment they breached defence to shoot in extra time, though WRONGLY, Howard was quick to give them the goal. It is clear: the match was FIXED. I do not know how much benefit Webb got out this web of deceit involving punters who had betted on Paul the octopus, the Spanish team and others. It needs to be investigated. I read an article of yours of cleaning up soccer that mentioned match fixing instances in international football. I am sorry that even the prayers failed in front of evil spiderman: Howard Webb, but he surely will have to pay dearly for his ill-deeds on the pitch, sooner or later, as he has a dubious record, and FIFA knew it, and still they made him to judge the final match. Shame on Blatter!
Nederlands are the true winners in the eyes of the world! If one chose to look at the replays and How Howard Webb delibrately cheated Holland out of the world cup, Webb should be prosecuted for match fixing!
Yes, Sandra, Howard Webb is known for his wrong decisions and favouring teams. A film was made: Kill the referee, after he wrongly awarded penalty to Austria against Poland, two years back and the Polish prime minister wanted his head for it. THIS MATCH WAS FIXED TO PROVE PAUL RIGHT AND BENEFIT PUNTERS AND SPAIN. SHAMELESS SPANIARDS ARE REJOICING! BUT WE ALL KNOW AND ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOUR ORANJE ARE THE BEST! SO CHEERS!
I want o pass my sincere sympathy on the final World Cup match for 2010. My son and I have been following the team for all the World Cup games. We will hope for better luck next time.

Sorry i have to disagree, but I don't understand the rating on Webb, its a bit chauvinistic. He was wrong on many decision: there was a lot of spanish dives he rewarded with free kicks and even cautioning dutch players after spanish dives, not cautioning spanish players when he should. Webbs mistakes sadly were decisive in this match. Players should not take it out on the referee, but you can understand the dutch players were upset with Webb after the match.
England should understand. They are upset after one obvious mistake in their match against Germany. Webb made many decisive mistakes in this match
Terribly disappointed all Antilleans were in support of Holland. Anyway congrats to ther Dutch team for making us proud to be Dutch citizens.
Yes, it is disappointing, knowing that Dutch chances were ruined by an Englishman Webb and not by mediocre Spain.. I consider Oranje as the victors sans trophy...Trophy does not make a winner but honest play does..Three cheers for Holland-Hup Holland! Though would have liked to read a winning commentary from Theo Tamis, with smiling pics of Dutch fans.....
Thank you Jasmin, you don't know so much about FUTBOL. Spain was absolutely better than PAISES BAJOS, and you seems comic, maybe you can work in a Circus. So "mediocre" Spain. You are mediocre, silly an fool, stupid, JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA
