Dutch crime tips line must remain anonymous

Published on 22 September 2009 - 7:36pm
More about:

Deputy Justice Minister Nebahat Albayrak has told MPs that callers to the anonymous crime tips line, Meld Misdaad Anoniem, must remain anonymous. A caller's name was made public in a recent case and the minister said the regulations concerned needed to be tightened up.

On Wednesday, it became known that the name of a woman who called the line to tip off the police had appeared in prosecution case papers. The defendant in the case, suspected of being involved in a stabbing incident in Rotterdam, now knows who tipped the police off.

The authorities tapped the woman's telephone because they thought her a likely prosecution witness and heard her call the tips line. Her details were then included in the prosecution dossier.
