Dutch Central Bank suspects more fake money

Published on 13 July 2009 - 4:34pm
More about:

The Dutch Central Bank has announced that this year 30 percent more fake euro bills have been seized than in 2008.

Around 32,000 bills have been intercepted over a period of six months. This is only a fraction of the estimated 400 million fake bills now believed to be circulating in the Netherlands.

The reason for the increase is unclear. The Dutch Central Bank suspects that a gang of forgers has become more active in the Netherlands.

By far the most forgeries were of 50-euro bills. In other EU countries the 20-euro bill is most popular. Overall, the EU saw a 17-percent increase in the number of seized forgeries.
