Dutch call for anti-minaret referendum

Published on 30 November 2009 - 11:49am
More about:

Dutch MP Geert Wilders' Freedom Party has said it wants a referendum on the building of minarets similar to the one held in Switzerland on Sunday . Mr Wilders expects the Dutch to ban new minarets just like a 57.5 percent majority of Swiss did.

The referendum result is hailed as a breakthrough by the opposition MP. "It's the first time that people in Europe have stood up to a form of Islamisation."

Other xenophobic nationalist parties in Europe are taking a similar line to the Netherlands' Freedom Party. Mario Borghezio, a Euro-MP for Italy's Northern League (Lega Nord) called for a referendum in Italy, saying "The flag of a courageous Switzerland which wants to remain Christian is flying over a near-Islamised Europe."

Switzerland is home to 6 million Christians and 400,000 Muslims. There are currently 200 mosques in the Alpine country, but only four minarets.

Insult to Muslims
International reactions to the Swiss vote have been negative and critical. Islamic countries, and Muslims in Switzerland itself, say that banning the building of new minarets puts limits on freedom of religion. "It's an insult to all Muslims," Egypt's Great Mufti Ali Gomaa said.

Speaking for the joint Islamic Organisations in Switzerland, the group's head Farhad Afshar said,
"The most painful for us is not the minaret ban, but the symbol sent by this vote. Muslims do not feel accepted as a religious community."

The Swiss government is obliged by law to implement the ban following the popular vote in favour, but the measure is likely to be found in contravention of international agreements, to which Switzerland is bound, such as the European Human Rights Convention and United Nations agreements on human rights.

EU critical
Current EU chair Sweden said that the Swiss ban flouts freedom of expression. "I don't think we can build a Europe without that freedom," Swedish Justice Minister Beatrice Ask said in Brussels. Her colleague from the Swedish Immigration Department added, "How peculiar that such things are determined by referendum in Switzerland. In my country, they are decided on by local town planners."

Other European politicians added their voices. "It's a manifestation of intolerance," French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said in a reaction.

I'm not even going to touch on muslim hypocrisy on the minaret , though their certainly is enough of that. The question is when do the sedition and treason trials begin for western citizens, advocating destruction Western Culture and civilization, a la membership in groups like the muslim brotherhood. Politicians in western countries who have brought this islamic plight upon us also need to realize that they will be prosecuted as well. Think I'm off in the deep end? 10 years ago, how many would have guessed that a Black gentleman would be President of the USA, or a week ago that the Swiss constitution would prohibit the construction of minarets in Switzerland.

God bless the Swiss - great to see them putting their traditional way of life ahead of the demands of Muslim immigrants. Switzerland belongs to the Swiss. It does not belong to the immigrants. If you choose to make Switzerland your new home then you adapt to, integrate with and respect their traditional culture and way of life. If you don't like it then go back to where you came from. The Swiss didn't ask you to move there. It's horrifying to read what Muslim immigration is doing to traditional European culture and to the native citizens of their host countries. The epidemic of rape attacks against the native Europeans is just sickening. The indigenous people of the UK and Europe will become a minority living under Islam if the people don't make a stand and reclaim their countries. I hope that this stance by the Swiss will encourage other countries to do the same.

I think the people of Switzerland have the right to reject any form of religion that wants to spring up or starts building around their country. That's their land and if any form of people wants to bring something apart from their way of thinking or worshiping they can do what they wanna do. A case in point is Saudi Arabia do they allow christians to put up worship buildings, BIG NO. I salute the Swiss.

I would note that the Great Mufti is a colossal hypocrite. Egyptian Christians are not allowed to build new churches, only to repair the old ones. Strikes me as a little more odious than what the Swiss have done, and of far longer standing. The Muslims should only be listened to once they start to give their Christian minorities the same privileges that they demand from us. Until then, they can go to hell.

Oh my, what a mess the Swiss made for the rest of Europe. Now every political party in Europe will join the bandwagon in order to score votes until EU is totally boycotted and sanctioned to where they end up with NO trade, NO jobs and Europe finds itself isolated from the rest of the world and of course that leads to world war 3 and no more Europe in the end.
