Dutch broadcaster to air ‘Political Idol’

Published on 19 March 2010 - 4:43pm
More about:

Dutch public broadcaster BNN are to broadcast a political talent competition. The winner of the competition will be given the chance to start and promote their own party in the Dutch elections on 9 June.

BNN’s shows have a relatively young audience and by organising the competition the broadcaster hopes to make politics more appealing to them. The broadcaster initially attempted to start their own party, but failed because the Dutch Media Commissariat ruled that this was against public broadcast regulations.

“The party will be fully in charge of their own name, programme and campaign strategy”, BNN says on their website, “Sophie and Filemon [the hosts of the show] will follow the candidates, but will have no formal role in the party.”
