In the Netherlands donations are still pouring in for Haiti. The aid agencies say hundreds of events and campaigns have been organised over the past fortnight.
In one campaign, hundreds of baker’s shops are selling bread in special bags. For each bag sold, ten eurocents goes to a fund to set up a bakery in Haiti.
Many schools have also organised fundraising activities. Two children from a primary school in The Hague raised 1000 euros by selling 700 pancakes.
The public can make their donations to a cooperating group of aid agencies via a special bank account. The agencies participating in the scheme include Oxfam Novib, the Dutch Red Cross, UNICEF and Save the Children. So far the account has received more than 100 million euros, including a 41.5 million euro contribution from the development cooperation ministry. The joint aid agencies’ appeal will continue until 26 February.
