Twelve people died and at least 20 others are feared drowned in India after an overcrowded boat packed with Hindu pilgrims capsized on a river in the south of the country.
The accident occurred as the boast was crossing the Godavari river in the state of Andhra Pradesh. About 50 passengers were on the boat, which had a capacity to carry 35, according to local police. Among the victims were five women and four children. The ramshackle boat was jammed with Hindu pilgrims on their way to a temple to offer prayers to mark the full moon day of Purnima.
