Shots have been fired at a mass demonstration against the election result in Tehran, killing one protester.
The shots were fired on Freedom Square in the Iranian capital. It is unclear where the shots came from. Demonstrators fled the square.
In spite of a ban hundreds of thousands of demonstrators had joined the protest march. It was probably the largest demonstration since the revolution in 1979. Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi spoke to the demonstrators from a car roof. It was his first appearance in public since Friday’s election result was announced. Earlier today Ahmadinejad supporters attacked Mousavi supporters with batons.
At the weekend serious rioting broke out in the Iranian capital after police heavy-handedly broke up a demonstration in protest against the election result.
Former president Mohammed Khatami has spoken out in favour of the opposition leader. The European Union has called on Iran to launch an investigation into the election results.
